Creating datasets

Creating datasets is the fundamental building block of storing data, applying permissions, applying Data Protection policies, enabling encryption, and various security features. On BrickStor SP systems, datasets are organized in hierarchical order with features enabled on the top/parent dataset propagating down to the children. Any dataset can provide its own settings by disabling the inheritance. This allows for building a variety of configurations that solve a wide range of complex use cases.

To create a dataset, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to the Datasets page.

  2. Click Create.

  3. Select the desired Pool and parent dataset.

  4. Enter a Name for the dataset.

  5. Choose a Storage Profile.

  6. (Optional) Select Copy settings from another dataset to copy settings from another dataset.

  7. (Optional) Provide a Description.

  8. The wizard may offer guidance through additional settings if any of the following options are chosen:

    1. SMB Share

    2. NFS Share

    3. S3 Bucket

    4. Dataset Encryption

Encryption can only be configured during the initial creation of a dataset. It cannot be enabled or disabled later.
    5. ImmutaVault

    6. Disable Active Defense

    7. Disable Data Protection

  9. Click Next to configure selected features or click Skip to confirmation, accepting the parent dataset’s settings.

  10. Configure ImmutaVault.

  11. Configure Permissions or continue with the inherited parent permissions.

  12. (SMB) Configure ABAC.

  13. Configure SMB. Files will still be visible to restricted users if Access-Based Enumeration is disabled.

  14. Configure NFS.

  15. Configure S3.

  16. Configure Storage Settings.

  17. Configure Active Defense.

  18. Configure Data Protection.

  19. Configure Dataset Replication.

  20. Confirm and click Create Dataset.
